Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee today announced that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado is the laureate of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

A Beacon for Democracy amid Repression

At 58, Machado has emerged as a central figure in Venezuela’s opposition movement. Despite being barred from participating in the 2024 presidential race and living under threat of arrest, she has remained in the country.

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Nobel Committee, lauded her as “a key, unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided.”

Reaction and Dedication

In a phone call from Venezuela, Machado expressed humility and solidarity, stating:

“This is something that the Venezuelan people deserve … This is a movement, an achievement of a whole society.”

In a striking move, she also dedicated the prize to the Venezuelan people and to former U.S. President Donald Trump, citing his “decisive support” for her cause.

Context and Challenges

Venezuela has suffered a severe political and humanitarian crisis under President Nicolás Maduro’s administration. Accusations of electoral fraud, suppression of dissent, and economic collapse have characterized the country’s recent history. Machado’s activism has brought international attention to these issues.

Her path to recognition has not been easy: many of her closest associates have been jailed or forced into exile. Despite these dangers, Machado’s resolve has remained firm—earning her both admiration and criticism.

What Comes Next

The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony will take place on December 10 in Oslo, when Machado will receive a medal, diploma, and a cash award of 11.1 million Swedish kronor (SEK).

Her victory is already resonating internationally: analysts see it as not only a personal honor but as a signal to authoritarian regimes worldwide that democratic resistance will be recognized.
