JMM Breaks Away from Mahagathbandhan, to Contest Independently on 6 Seats in Bihar Elections 2025
In a political surprise before the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has formally broken up with the Mahagathbandhan alliance. The party has decided to fight independently from six assembly seats in the state.
As per party sources, this was done after an internal deliberation process within the JMM leadership felt unhappy with seat-sharing arrangements and a lack of coordination in the alliance.
JMM spokesperson said that the party wishes to consolidate its leadership in border areas of Jamui, Banka, and Gaya, where it has an important tribal voter base. “Our choice to fight separately is to provide people with a better alternative and make tribal and marginalized groups’ voice clear in Bihar politics,” the spokesperson said.
The Mahagathbandhan, under the leadership of RJD and Congress, is already struggling within as smaller allies demand more seats. JMM’s exit places an additional complexity on the opposition’s unity against the ruling NDA alliance.
Political pundits feel JMM’s action might not significantly alter the overall election result but might affect wins in some of the tribal-majority constituencies. With Bihar charging towards an intense electoral battle, everyone is now watching how the Mahagathbandhan repositions itself after this surprise defeat.
