Amol Muzumdar: The Journey of India Women’s Cricket Team Coach from Mumbai’s Cricket Fields to Global Leadership

Amol Muzumdar, the head coach of the India Women’s Cricket Team, is one of the most respected names in Indian domestic cricket. Known for his calm personality and deep cricketing knowledge, Muzumdar has spent over two decades contributing to Indian cricket — first as a player and now as a coach guiding India’s women towards global success.

Early Life and Background

Amol Muzumdar was born on November 11, 1974, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He grew up in the cricket-rich environment of Mumbai, which has produced legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Rohit Sharma. Muzumdar studied at Shardashram Vidyamandir — the same school where Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli trained under coach Ramakant Achrekar.

From a young age, Amol showed great promise as a technically sound batsman. His dedication and patience quickly made him one of Mumbai cricket’s most reliable players.

Domestic Cricket Career

Amol Muzumdar made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 1993–94, and immediately made headlines by scoring 260 runs on debut — a record-breaking innings at that time. Over the years, he became one of the most consistent run-scorers in Ranji Trophy history.

During his career, Muzumdar played for Mumbai, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh, and scored more than 11,000 first-class runs with an impressive average. Despite such a prolific record, he was unfortunate never to play for the Indian national team, a fact that many cricket fans still consider one of Indian cricket’s biggest oversights.

Transition to Coaching

After retiring from all forms of cricket in 2014, Muzumdar moved into coaching and commentary. His deep understanding of the game, especially batting techniques and match strategy, quickly earned him recognition.

He worked as a batting coach for the Rajasthan Royals (IPL) and also served as the Batting Consultant for the South African national team. His ability to bring out the best in players and focus on mental toughness made him a popular figure among cricketers.

Appointment as India Women’s Team Coach

In October 2023, Amol Muzumdar was appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His appointment was seen as a major step toward professionalizing and strengthening the women’s team setup.

Since taking charge, Muzumdar has emphasized fitness, fielding, and mental preparation. Under his guidance, players like Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Shafali Verma have shown renewed confidence and aggression on the field. His calm approach and focus on discipline have helped the team improve their consistency across formats.
