India Successfully Launches Agni Prime Missile from Rail-Based Launcher
New Delhi– The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has test-fired the Agni Prime (Agni-P) ballistic missile from a rail-based launcher successfully, marking a significant achievement for India’s defense capabilities. The trial was conducted from the eastern coast and proved India’s increasing prowess in strategic missile systems as well as improving mobility options for the armed forces.
The Agni Prime, an indigenously developed next-generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile, is a two-stage, solid-fuelled weapon system with advanced guidance, precision, and maneuverability. The missile has the ability to strike targets within 1,000 km and 2,000 km, and it is a critical component of India’s credible deterrence strategy.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh confirmed the successful test in a statement on X(Twitter).
Major Highlights of the Launch:
First-of-its-kind rail-based test: This successful launch confirms India’s capability to launch long-range missiles from various platforms, providing operational flexibility.
Increased mobility and security: Rail transport systems enable quick deployment, better concealment, and rapid response.
State-of-the-art technology: Agni Prime has advanced navigation, cutting-edge avionics, and a very accurate guidance system.
The test met all mission requirements, with the missile successfully hitting its intended target, according to defense officials. Radar, telemetry, and tracking data were used to confirm the missile’s performance parameters.
Strategic Significance
The Agni Prime is a part of India’s elite Agni missile family, which is instrumental in bolstering the nation’s nuclear triad. With the successful launch of the missile from a rail system, India has demonstrated its ability to safeguard and deliver strategic assets in varied operational environments.
Defense specialists are convinced that this development would enhance India’s deterrence strategy in the face of changing regional security threats. It is also a reflection of progress towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in defense technologies.
