PM Modi Meets Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister in New Delhi
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev on Friday at the World Food India 2025 event, strengthening India-Russia ties further.
During their bilateral meeting, the two leaders also discussed deepening cooperation on shared interests, with a special emphasis on agriculture, food security, and increasing trade diversity. Modi highlighted India’s commitment to enhancing cooperation in agro-technological development, sustainable farming, and enhancing bilateral supply chains.
Patrushev, who leads one of Russia’s most valuable portfolios, described the meeting as “fruitful and forward-looking,” stating India and Russia share complementary strengths in food production and energy. Both sides decided to set up a high-level intergovernmental working group to supervise the implementation of projects agreed upon.
This outreach is precisely when the food security of the world is threatened by climate change, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical tensions. Being the world’s largest agricultural producer, India views this engagement as an opportunity to strengthen relationships beyond the conventional defence and hydrocarbons domains.
In his address at the event, Modi also reaffirmed the “time-tested” nature of India–Russia relations, asserting that New Delhi remains committed to preserving its strategic autonomy while advancing global cooperation.
Experts are of the view that the summit is India’s determination to broaden the India–Russia agenda to soft sectors such as agriculture and food systems, hence developing resilience in bilateral engagement. In the process, India is nonetheless balancing a tightrope between diplomatic ties with other great powers in a shifting global landscape.
